A wounded communist rebel was captured by soldiers after his comrades left him behind following a clash in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, on Sunday.

Lt. Col. Jaime Datuin, commander of the Army’s 75th Infantry Battalion, identified the captured rebel as Jessie Millama alias Ka Jade, who was given initial medical aid for his bullet wounds before he was sent to a hospital in Bislig City.

Government forces recovered one improvised explosive device, AK47 ammunition, assorted medicine and  personal belongings after the 9 a.m. encounter with New People’s Army rebels in Barangay San Ramon, a rebel-infiltrated village.

According to Datuin, residents of Barangay San Ramon reported the presence of armed men in their community Sunday morning.

Soldiers were sent to verify the report but were met by gunfire from members of the NPA Guerilla Front 14, NorthEastern Mindanao Regional Committee under Commander  Satur.

A brief firefight ensued which prompted the rebels to flee into the forest.

“I would like to extend my deep gratitude to the concern citizen particularly to the people of Sitio Raki for the information given to the troops that took part on the success of our mandated tasks,” Datuin said.

“I am appealing to the terrorist NPA who are still hiding and running away from the military operations that might put end or risk their lives like what happened to their comrade to stop their armed struggle and lay down their firearms and live happily with their family,” he said.

“With the joint effort of the Local Government Units and your Philippine Army are doing their best ability to ensure the welfare of those active members of the NPA who decided to return in the folds of law with the government.” By CLC
