Unidentified assailants on Tuesday evening gunned down a village chief in San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, police said.
Police Captain Dominic Parello, San Miguel police chief, identified the victim as Mendo Sering, 44, incumbent village chieftain in Barangay Libas-gua.
Parello said Sering was sitting at the balcony of his house when he was attacked by the gunmen around 8:20 p.m.
Sering suffered bullet wounds on his head and at the back of his body that caused his instant death.
Police recovered several empty bullet shells from caliber .45 at the crime scene.
A hot pursuit operation is currently being conducted for the identification and arrest of the fleeing suspects, Parello said.
He said investigators were looking into political rift, vengeance and land dispute as the primary motives behind the killing.
The police would also look into allegations that the communist New People’s Army (NPA) could have been responsible for the killing, Parello added. CLC
