A suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in a Tuesday morning clash with army soldiers in San Luis town in Agusan del Sur province, the military reported on Wednesday.
Soldiers of the 26 Infantry Battalion engaged ten armed men in an hour-long exchange of fire in Barangay Mahagsay, according to Col. Andres Centino, the commander of the 401st Infantry Brigade based in Agusan del Sur.
The soldiers were patrolling Sitio Odal following reports about the presence of armed men believed to be NPA insurgents in the area, Centino said.
The armed men fired at the soldiers, triggering the firefight. The military recovered one AK-47 at the clash site.
“Army troops will remain vigilant in protecting our communities against this NPA terrorist group. Our campaign continues to weed out this menace,” Centino said.
The soldiers have yet to identify the slain suspect. No soldier was hurt in the encounter , he said.
Centino said the military was renewing its call to communist guerrillas to surrender so that they could live peaceful lives.
“To those who are willing to give up and live peacefully, we will accept them fairly,” he said. By GD
