Power consumers in Surigao City and parts of Surigao del Norte province lost electricity as typhoon “Basyang” hit transmission lines.
According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), Basyang snapped 3 transmission lines and toppled electric posts in areas covering Surigao City and in the towns of San Francisco and Malimono .
The first power interruptions were reported as early as Tuesday morning, with the outages increasing as the typhoon came nearer.
Nearly 24 hours after the typhoon crossed the province, the NGCP, which manages the maintenance of main distribution lines that supply electricity to Surigao del Norte Electric Cooperative (SURNECO) had not made estimates as to when power would be fully restored to its customers.
Local officials have been struggling to answer queries from weary residents as to when they could get electricity back.
Power outages have made life doubly hard for over 7,000 evacuees stuck at several evacuation centers.
The province registered 5 deaths from floods and slides spawned by Basyang. By GD Photo courtesy of Rolly Itchon
