NPA releases captive tribal leader in Surigao del Sur

The communist New People’s Army (NPA) released on Friday evening, a Manobo tribal leader after holding him captive for about 24 hours, police said.

Chief Supt. Rolando B. Felix, Caraga police director said, Datu Saturnino Gallego has been freed unharmed by his abductors.

Gallego, who has been helping the government with its peace and development program was turned over to community leaders somewhere in San Roque area, San Miguel town, Surigao del Sur, at 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

Gallego was snatched from his home in Barangay Libas Sud by about 20 heavily armed guerillas on Thursday evening.

Beside Gallego, Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit Active Auxiliary (CAA) member Danny Rivas was also abducted.

The fate of the government militiaman still being held captive was unclear. By CLC
