Miner taking steps to protect Agusan environment

SRMI: Strictly compliant with the mining law, particularly the requirement to rehabilitate mined-out areas.

Responsible as it is, mining firm SR Metals, Inc. (SRMI) marked a total of 286,929 planted trees covering 371.36 hectares to date within and outside mine site as part of its efforts in the environmental protection and enhancement.

May Ann Galvezo, SRMI’s environmental supervisor , said the mine firm has apportioned at least 50 million per year for its Annual Environmental Protection and Enhancement Program as its compliance with one of the provisions of DAO 2010-21 that requires to allocate for its annual environment-related expense a percentage which may approximate a minimum of three to five percent (3-5%) of its direct mining and milling costs.

“We’re doing this not only because we comply with the law but because we love the people and the environment,” she said.

SR Metals has been a consistent recipient of the prestigious Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award for 3 consecutive years since 2014.

This is the highest award conferred every year to deserving companies engaged in mining activities such as quarry operation, underground and surface mining operation and mineral processing which established high standards in environmental protection, safety and health and community development.

SRMI which is based in Tubay, Agusan del Norte and has a total mine area of 1079 hectares, engaged in nickel ore mine operation since 2006, vowed to continue rehabilitation and reforestation practices until no land is left barren. By JD
