Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar was recently lauded by the National Press Club (NPC) for improving media standards and looking after the welfare of journalists.
At the NPC’s 66th anniversary celebration Monday night, Andanar was presented with a plaque of appreciation recognizing his “unstinting support” not just for members of the press club but for journalists nationwide.
“I’ve covered Malacañang since I was a very young reporter and, I’m going to tell you this not because I want to flatter my boss, Secretary Martin Andanar is one of the best press secretaries because the media is in his heart,” Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) executive director Undersecretary Joel Egco said.
With Andanar at the helm, facilities and equipment of the PCOO’s attached agencies, such as the People’s Television Network (PTV), Radyo ng Bayan, Radio-Television Malacañang (RTVM) and the Philippine News Agency, were improved.
As the largest and one of the oldest organizations of journalists in the Philippines, the NPC commended Andanar, a former broadcaster, for being instrumental in the issuance of Executive Order (EO) 2 and Administrative Order (AO) 1.
Signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on 23 July 2016, EO 2, also known as “Freedom of Information,” mandates full public disclosure of all offices under the executive branch.
AO 1, meanwhile, created the PTFoMS on 11 October 2016. It is mandated to protect the life, liberty, and security of media workers and their families.
The Press Club also cited Andanar’s support to its projects, among them is its Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese General Hospital, where members can avail of a 50 percent discount on all medical services and hospitalization. By Kristina Maralit
