NEWSPIX: Volunteers step up drive to clean up Siargao’s beaches

Armed with garbage disposal bags, brooms and their generous hearts, volunteers collected sacks of garbage on a beach in General Luna town, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte during a coastal clean-up last Sunday.

The drive, spearheaded by the Siargao Environmental Association (SEA Movement), drew volunteers from students, tourists, resort owners, government agencies and civil society organizations to help clean up the coastline of General Luna, home to the famous Cloud 9 surfing spot .

Siargao, the region’s premier tourist destination, is slowly suffering from environment problems because of unregulated development, lax enforcement of laws and the surge in tourist arrivals. By GD Photos courtesy ofTourist Pnp GenLuna Siargao
