A two-vehicle convoy of vaccination and health workers returning to Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte after conducting an immunization drive for polio was shot by suspected members of the New People’s Army on Wednesday afternoon.

Police Lieutenant Rico Cusulo, Kitcharao town police chief, said personnel of the town’s rural health unit (RHU) were shot at by suspected communist rebels in Barangay Bangayan, Zapanta Valley at past 4 p.m.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

A bullet tore through one of the vehicles in the convoy, a Toyota Innova driven by municipal nurse Ingrid Achinue, according to Cusulo.

He said the health workers joined the Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio program which kicked off Monday and conducted door-to-door vaccination for children in Zapanta Valley, a known stronghold of the NPA.

Cusulo condemned the NPA for sabotaging the free vaccination drive.

The NPA has yet to issue a statement on the incident. By CLC
