Pope Francis has named a priest from Cagayan de Oro as the new bishop of the Diocese of Tandag in Surigao del Sur.
The appointment of Fr. Raul Dael was announced on Monday by the Vatican News, the information network of the papal office, after Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Nereo Odchimar, who reached the mandatory age of retirement.
The 51-year-old bishop-elect is currently the Vicar for the Clergy of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.
Dael was born in Misamis Oriental on Oct. 10 , 1966. After his philosophy and theology studies at the Xavier University, he was ordained priest in 1993.
He served as professor and director of spiritual and pastoral formation at St. John Vianney Seminary of Theology from 2000 until he left the country for further studies in Rome in 2003.
