The diocese of Tandag issued a pastoral letter calling for an investigation into the extent of mining and logging activities in the towns of Carrascal, Cantilan, Madrid, Carmen and Lanuza, following the deadly landslides and flooding as Tropical Storm “Basyang” crossed Surigao del Sur province recently.
The pastoral letter has been read as homily for Sunday masses on February 18. Entitled “A call for responsibility,” it was signed by Tandag archbishop Nereo Odchimar.
The statement was issued amid “evidence” of mining and logging activities-logs and excavated soil swept downstream by heavy current which rammed into houses, bridges, village halls and other structures in upland areas worst hit by the floods and slides. By GD
