A suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed on Monday morning in a clash with Army soldiers in a village in Cantilan town in Surigao del Sur province.
Lt. Col. Jezreel Diagmel, commander of the Army’s 36th Infantry Battalion, said soldiers were on combat patrol operation when they engaged a 10-man NPA group in a firefight in Barangay Cabangahan, at around 8:20 a.m.
Diagmel said residents informed them about the presence of heavily-armed rebels in the village, believed to be members of the Guerilla Front 16 of the NPA’s Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee under Ka Jacob.
The rebel, whose identity is yet to be known, was killed in the brief encounter.
There was no casualty on the government side, Diagmel said.
The government forces also recovered from the clash scene one AK-47 automatic rifle, personal belongings and documents of high intelligence value.
Checkpoints were set up and more soldiers were sent to the area to run after rebels who fled after the clash. CLC
