The barangay chairman in Surigao City killed in a shootout with police officers during an alleged gun deal gone wrong was tagged as the primary suspect behind the January 7 killing of his predecessor.
Lt. Col. Christian Rafols, Surigao City police chief, said Reneboy Aquino, barangay captain of Balibayon was facing criminal charges for killing former barangay captain Lanie Terezo, who was shot dead in front of her house last month.
At the time of her death, the victim was serving a fresh term as village councilor .
“He’s the suspect and was facing charges filed by Terezo’s family,” Rafols said.
But Rosalie Aquino, the wife of the slain village chairman vehemently denied the allegation and dismissed as “baseless” the case against her husband.
“He had no reason at all to kill her, they were allies,” Rosalie said.
The 41-year-old Aquino was killed in a police shootout past 1:00 p.m Thursday along Amat Street in Barangay Taft after he allegedly fought authorities during a buy-bust operation where the suspect was caught selling a caliber .45 pistol .
During the transaction, Aquino sensed that he was dealing with an undercover police and drew his firearm and fired towards the operatives.
The policemen retaliated and killed the village official, Rafols said. By CLC
