Police officers from three municipalities in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte underwent random drug testing Thursday as part of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) efforts to clean up its ranks.
“We are serious in making our barangays drug-free in Caraga region, thus, we also want to make sure that our uniformed personnel conducting barangay drug clearing operations are not involved in illegal drug-related activities,” Caraga police director Chief Supt. Rolando Felix said.
Felix said the drug test, spearheaded by Surigao del Norte deputy director for operations, Supt. Rudy Elandag came as a surprise for the General Luna, Burgos and San Benito police force.
While conducting field inspection, Elandag suddenly called Provincial Crime Laboratory Office personnel and asked them to conduct drug testing.
A total of 51 police underwent the drug test.
Those who test positive of the drug test and the following confirmatory test will be subject to dismissal from the PNP, Feliz said.
Felix said he wants to ensure that policemen assigned on the island are drug-free and be role models to the public .
PNP records show 25 police officers in Caraga who tested positive for illegal drugs use during the random drug tests conducted among police offices and units in the region were dismissed from the service from 2014 to 2016.
“This excludes the seven personnel who tested positive for illegal drugs use and were transferred to the PNP National Headquarters in 2016,” Felix added. By YUC
