Poor Caraganon households can now buy low-priced subsidized rice in the region’s markets, according to the National Food Authority in Caraga (NFA-Caraga).
The NFA-Caraga said it has started the unloading and distribution of cheap imported rice to 188 accredited rice retailers in Agusan and Surigao provinces, including the islands of Siargao and Dinagat, to augment the low rice stock in said areas in view of the depletion of the agency’s stocks.
The NFA rice could be bought again for P27 to P32 per kilogram through accredited retailers spread all over the region.
For months, the supply of cheap NFA rice came to a halt after the buffer stock of the agency got depleted.
About 5,000 metric tons (MT) of rice from Vietnam and Thailand that arrived at the Surigao City Port on June 16 have so far been earmarked for Surigao areas alone.
The country’s grains agency said it would be implementing strict market monitoring and enforcement to ensure that poor households would get access to affordable rice. By CLC
