Police investigators were eyeing communist rebels as those behind the killing of a Baptist Church pastor in a hinterland village in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur last week.
Police Maj. Darwin Yu, chief of the Esperanza Municipal Police Station, said that suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were seen as likely responsible for the killing of Alfonso Gayento, an evangelist of the Fundamental Baptist Church in Barangay San Vicente around 7:30 a.m., on Thursday, October 31.
The NPA was known to operate in the hinterlands of Esperanza.
Yu said Gayento could have been mistaken for an “informer” giving information to the military and helping operations against the rebels.
He vowed to give justice to the victim’s family. By CLC
