Poetry group revives Butuan’s poetry-reading tradition

By Bryan Edulzura

Outdoor poetry reading session under the rambutan trees or in native hut surrounded by hanging plants or at the middle of a huge fishpond separates Butuan Poetry Society’s Saturday morning regular event among other poetry enthusiasts gatherings.

Initiated by poetry-loving citizens of the city led by creative writer RJS and his closed friends and colleagues Vangie Pena-Dominise, Joy Bungabung and the late Casiana Torralba ten years ago or even earlier.

Held every first Saturday of the month the group welcomes and encourages anyone who loves to read aloud and share their favorite poetry or any written piece where in a single paragraph, line, song or biblical or religious passage.

In the past years, friends and participants came and go and came again. Lawyers, doctors, teachers, private and public employees, students and expatriates from Europe and USA came, make friends, interacted and had fun. Even people who like to listen are invited to come as a way of celebrating life and there is no fee at all.

This year’s revival will start first Saturday of July, rain or shine, at the “Art Abode” of Zoila’s Farm and Retreat in Barangay Taligaman. Anyone interested to join are requested to call and confirm days before each sessions to any regular participants and friends mentioned above.

Done informally, the sessions flow with fun and even with laughter in between readings and with healthy food too. In the end it becomes like a picnic guided with the magic and sensibility of poetry. Throw in loving solidarity and warmth.
