A suspected “revolutionary tax” collector of the New People’s Army was killed on Friday in a shootout in Sison town, Surigao del Norte with police officers who tried to arrest him for illegal firearms possession.
Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat Jr., chief of Police Regional Office in Caraga, said Josefino Calang, shot police officers who were serving him his arrest warrant in Barangay San Pedro at around 12:45 a.m.
The police officers returned fire, killing Calang.
Police recovered a caliber .38 revolver and a hand grenade inside his house.
Caramat said the suspect was supposedly engaged in rebel tax collection activities in the town.
“The suspect was identified by the local entrepreneurs in Sison town as the one collecting extortion money for the CTG. The businessmen were forced to give in to their demands for the fear of their lives and properties,” he said.CLC
