A member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed during an encounter with soldiers belonging to the 30th Infantry Battalion in Sitio Puyawon, Barangay Mahanub, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte.
Capt. Regie Go, 4th Infantry Division public affairs officer, said the still unidentified slain rebel was a member of NPA SYP 16-C, of Guerrilla Front 16, Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee(NEMRC).
In a belated report, the Army said on February 19 that a concerned citizen tipped them off about the presence of communist guerillas conducting harassment and extortion activities in the area, prompting the troops to scour the area.
Before reaching the site, volume of fire met the government forces that sparked a 30-minute gunbattle.
When the firefight was over, the search and clearing operation team found the lifeless body of a rebel where they also recovered one M16 Armalite rifle.
No soldier was hurt in the incident, Go said.
Aside from the slain rebel’s body, soldiers also recovered at the site of encounter an anti-personnel mine (APM), one blasting cap, five meters electrical wire, one backpack, one bandoleer and five meters utility rope.
Go said the body of the slain rebel had been turned over to Gigaquit officials.
Col. Maurito L. Licudine, newly-installed commander of the 402nd Infantry Brigade based in Butuan, commended the troops’ accomplishment.
“We appreciate the overwhelming support of the people in tipping-off the presence of CNTs. This is a clear indication that the people are already fed-up of with the CNTs’ decades-long banditry and extortion,” he said. By CLC Contributed photo
