Four days before Monday’s elections, a suspected communist rebel was killed in a firefight with government forces in the town of Esperanza in Agusan del Sur early Thursday morning, the military said.
The report said the government forces were tracking down a unit of the New People’s Army rebels as part of preparations for the midterm elections on Monday when the firefight occurred in the village of Oro at 6:45 a.m.
A fighting ensued until the communist guerrillas disengaged and fled deeper into the jungle, the military said.
A .38-cal. revolver was also recovered by the government troopers from the scene of the firefight during the clearing operation.
The remains of the slain NPA rebel, identified only as alias Toto, had been turned over to the local government unit “for proper disposition.” By CLC
