A still unidentified New People’s Army (NPA) member was killed and another captured in an encounter Saturday in Santiago, Agusan del Norte, a military commander said.

Lt. Col. Isagani Criste, commander of the Army’s 29th Infantry Battalion, said the captured rebel was a 19-year-old member of Guerilla Front 16 of the NPA’s North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee who was wounded in the firefight and was left behind by his comrades .

Criste said soldiers were conducting foot patrol in Sitio Kamingawan in Barangay San Isidro when they chanced upon a 20-man NPA group at about 10 a.m.

A 15-minute firefight erupted, which resulted in the death of one rebel whose body was recovered at the encounter site.

The soldiers, who did not suffer any casualties, recovered two M4 rifles.

Criste said pursuing troops who stumbled on the wounded rebel– later identified as Kent Antonio immediately applied first aid and sought for his evacuation to the nearest hospital for proper medical treatment.

“I am proud of my soldiers for being pro-people in the conduct of our operations. We are saddened that there remain some desperate people who chose to fight than cooperate in sustaining the peace,” Criste said, adding that as of Sunday, Antonio, who was wounded in the leg was already in stable condition.

The remains of the slain communist rebel was brought to a funeral parlor in Cabadbaran City awaiting claimants. By CLC
