Communist rebels owned up the ambush in Nasipit town in Agusan del Norte that killed two soldiers and wounded another on Saturday.

Ka Omar Ibarra, spokesperson of the NPA’s Western Agusan del Norte unit, on Monday claimed responsibility for the ambush of the soldiers and militiamen belonging to the 23rd Infantry Battalion who were operating in Barangay Camagong.

Killed were Staff Sgt. Sahari Jamjahare and militiaman Totong Sulaygay Elpidio. Wounded was militiaman identified as Erwin Mandahinog.

Ibarra claimed that the ambush was in response to the request of residents to stop the alleged human rights abuses committed by the soldiers.

He warned Army troops that those who committed human rights violations would be priority targets of the NPA.

But the military accused the NPA of making false accusations to justify their murderous attacks on soldiers.

Local officials and residents, including the victims’ families, condemned the ambush and demanded justice for the victims. By GD
