My 66-year-old hardworking grandmother asked me when I told her not to burn the dried leaves and other garden waste anymore as ordered by environmental experts.
She inquired why. I told her burning garbage in one’s backyard caused disturbance and even destruction of the Earth’s protective ozone layer and cause unwanted climate change. I impress her even more, I cited what industrial rich countries like China, USA, Japan and India as causing huge pollution because of their factories emitting thick smoke day in and day out the whole year round.
Upon hearing this, she said, “Why don’t you tell that to the environment experts of China et. al. to insist on this to their industrialists and leaders. Not pressuring small, irrelevant gardeners like me. Let’s see if those big, powerful polluters understand this and do the right thing for all living creatures in this planet.”
My unschooled lola may not know many things in this world and ordered what to do by policymakers and environment experts but to be fair she has no business and financial interests that aggravate climate change. She only wanted to drive away the insects that occasionally feast on her vegetables.
Smoke from the garden waste is part of the positive cycle of gardening that did humanity so why are the so-called experts shamelessly pressure poor helpless people like my lola and not those environment and climate criminals?
Hello, folks, why compel the “karaniwang tao” be the helpless scapegoat because you cannot dare to tell that to industrialists and political leaders who have never even touch and work on a soil with their bare hands.
We all want a fair and balance weather orchestrated by God. We all need to eat a healthy plant-based foods for a sustainable life. The best way to do this is to grow and nourish it ourselves. This is a part of our sustenance and our responsibility and our humble sense of empowerment.
