Surigao port workers ended their 43-day strike that had crippled the port’s operations and forced Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) officials to divert ships to other ports in nearby Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte provinces .
The 102-strong workers belonging to Surigao Dock Workers Union agreed to lift the strike Friday after their employer’s, Prudential Customs Brokerage Services eight-year contract with the PPA was terminated on October 6.
The port workers’ union, however, said the issues that led to the strike – higher wages, benefits and better working conditions have not yet been settled.
Disgruntled workers will be hired back as temporary workers by PPA, which took over port operations until it can find another cargo handling operator at Surigao port. Caraga News Courier File Photo
