NEWSPIX: Hundreds flee Agusan town to escape clash between military, rebels

Hundreds of villagers in the hinterland communities of Kitcharao in Agusan del Norte province fled their homes on Sunday in the wake of a military operation against communist rebels.

Those displaced, who belong to at least 43 families or 211 persons mostly from the town’s Zapanta Valley sought refuge in nearby villages, according to militant tribal group Kahugpungan sa Lumadnong Organisasyon-Caraga (Kasalo-Caraga).

The fleeing Mamanwa “lumad” (indigenous peoples) had feared full-blown military operation and decided to abandon their homes to avoid being caught in the crossfire, the group said. By GD Photos courtesy of KC
