Butuanons embarked Magelllan’s historic voyage from Homonhon to Butuan March 21-23. The three-day event was organized by Butuan-Calagan Historical and Cultural Foundation, Incorporated and supported by the Butuan City Government. The group was composed of historians, scholars, enthusiasts and archaeologists and a mariner invited from Manila.
Aboard an “oversized” fiberglass pump boat, the exploration team sailed from Homonhon Island end winded up in Butuan’s acknowledged archaeological sites like Pinamangkulan.
Photo shows the team of experts in front of the historic monument honoring Magellan’s arrival in what is now the town of Magallanes, then a tiny village of Butuan. The team also visited Limasawa Island and other places of historical consequences. By Ramon Jorge Sarabosing
