Street vendors who have been ousted from various locations in the city staged a rally Monday morning in front of the Butuan City Hall to protest a city ordinance banning sidewalk and ambulant vending in the city’s sidewalks.
The ambulant vendors, numbering around 300, said the local government was taking away their livelihood in a bid to clear the sidewalks of vendors and obstructions for pedestrians.
The Butuan City government has recently implemented SP Ordinance No. 5267-2017, which banned and regulated sidewalk and ambulant vending that impede the flow of pedestrians and disturb traffic.
The protesters, who also accused the clearing team of maltreatment and harassment asked the City Council to amend the existing ordinance and to allow them to sell their goods in the city’s sidewalks. By CLC
