NEWSPIX: Army denies ‘evacuation’ in 2 Surigao Sur towns

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has denied reports claiming evacuation of villages in the towns of Liangga and San Agustin in Surigao del Sur, blaming militant groups for allegedly disseminating propaganda and misinformation.

This came after reports emerged on Sunday that more than 700 villagers from 12 hinterland villages in two towns fled their homes following increased presence of soldiers in their communities.

Col. Andres Centino, commanding officer of the Army’s 401st Infantry Brigade, debunked the information that they were militarizing the areas and that soliders were occupying lumad communities. Photo courtesy of PIA-Caraga
