Mary Nicole Co, last year’s Mutya Hong Butuan (Miss Butuan) titleholder has proven that being a beauty queen is more than just a title but a job.
The 23-year-old Industrial Engineering graduate of Ateneo de Davao University has become a pioneer of current beauty queens giving her time and meaning to a title bestowed on her and not simply as a decoration on her head.
As her commitment to the crown, she works as information officer of the City Tourism Office (CTO), and served as ambassadress of the city’s cultural and tourism affairs. Rarely do we hear beauty queens commit themselves to advocacy and vanish to oblivion right after being crowned.
Not Ms. Co, who will relinquish her crown to a successor in few weeks’ time but perhaps not without a bang.
“Nicole is a hard act to follow,” declares Vangie Pena-Dominise, officer-in-charge (OIC) of the CTO and Nicole’s chief.
“She is hardworking and initiative. You can depend on her,” she added. Both ladies are always together and one can sense their good vibes .
“She’s the perfect person in the position. She is beauty, brains and passion,” swears Richard Vilar, an acknowledged theater director, Asian storyteller and the city’s artistic consultant.
Vilar adds Nicole’s not only passionate of her work but is creative. “She find ways to do things even independently and come out successful.”
Both her superiors agree she is unlike other beautiful women with titles with attitude. “Nicole makes everyone at ease and comfortable with her charm and sincerity. No put-on too,” Vilar quipped.
Other observers in the city hall see’s her personality as light and down-to-earth. “She has a ready smile to everyone, like a true respectable celebrity,” says an employee.
Other than her official title as Miss Butuan, she is fondly called and known as the “face of Butuan” symbolizing the vibrance, dynamism and charm of the city by the ancient river.
