Tribal leaders in Agusan del Norte, condemned on Monday the killing of a colleague by suspected New People’s Army hitmen over the weekend.

Eddie Sulhayan Ampiyawan, indigenous peoples’ mandatory representative (IPMR) to the Agusan del Norte provincial council, said authorities must conduct a thorough investigation and exert maximum effort to solve the murder of Datu Roberto Acedo Mandominda .

Mandominda, chieftain of Higaonon tribe, just stepped out of his house at Barangay Kasiklan in Las Nieves town, past 7 am on Saturday (Aug.4 ) when gunmen on board a motorcycle drove by and shot him several times.

He was hit in the head and body, and died on the spot.

Ampiyawan, also known as “Datu Bawang,” tagged communist rebels as behind the killing of Mandominda, saying it was due to the IP leaders’ refusal to cooperate with, and allow the NPA in their communities.

A staunch anti-communist ally of the military, the slain tribal chieftain was  reportedly active in convincing his fellow “lumad” to join the government’s Civilian Active Auxiliary.

The NPA has yet to issue a statement regarding Bawang’s accusation. By GD
