How much do you love your children?

By Benido Castro

Dear Parents,

I am sure you will say your love for them cannot be measured. I agree, but as parents of today there are important things you miss. You do not know it matters a lot because it seem so harmless and not something to talk about.

I have news for you. It’s not fake news but please check it out, verify and study it if you do not believe it. Better yet, talk to the experts or read their published works so you will fully understand and maybe do the right thing.

This concerns about the uncontrolled and indiscipline viewing time on TV and video screen the children have that you even encourage to make things easy for you.

Most parents think endless screen viewing is normal but they do not know its negative effects to the children’s psychological, mental and social character and as they mature. Most parents like to think what they do not see won’t happen so they let things happen as they are.

There are studies that children exposed to TV and video games exhibit attitudes of disrespect, violence and all rude behaviors because they get them from their screen heroes. And yet parents wonder where the kids got those behaviors when they are supposedly decent, educated parents.

Guess what dear parents, the fantasy heroes on the screen are more powerful than you are and they control the viewers  attitudes and behaviors. Do not wonder why your children have terrible tantrums, too demanding, superior thinking and do not respect and shout at you.

If you do not do anything about it and think one day the particular child will change for good, you are wrong. He becomes a strong candidate of the school and neighborhood bully. That is not only your problem but the whole society. We don’t want that, do we? So who are we to blame the next generation’s trouble-makers and “salot sa bayan?”

Dear parents, please discipline and minimize the”connection” of violent-hungry screen characters/heroes so they do not control the innocent minds of your children. There is a better option to that-reading.

Reading sharpens the brain unlike screen viewing as it numbs the brain. Screen viewing only entertains the eyes, reading stimulates imagination and enforce intelligence.  I am sure you are intelligent and loving enough which one you want to give to your children.

We all say this is a technology controlled world. We all agree on that but do we have to give up everything to make us all slaves of those we think are better than us? Please think about it and examine where all these lead us.

And start reading good old books yourselves. Be the perfect example of your children. Be their real super heroes. You be glad you did because they are so proud of you.
