A man convicted of rape but was released two months ago through the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) program, surrendered to policemen in Butuan City on Friday.
Terencio Ponesto,51, told the police that he had heard President Duterte gave a 15-day ultimatum for those convicted of heinous crimes and released over good conduct to yield to authorities.
Fearing for his security, Ponesto sought help from his relatives and surrendered to the Butuan City Police Office Station 4 in Barangay Ampayon around at 9:30 a.m. Friday (Sept. 6), said Butuan police spokesperson Capt. Emerson Alipit.
Ponesto was jailed in 1999 after he was convicted of rape. He was released from the Davao Penal Colony (DAPECOL) in Panabo, Davao del Norte on July 24, 2019, due to the GCTA law.
He has lived with his sister in Barangay Pigdaulan, Butuan City following release from prison.
According to Alipit said they are awaiting further orders of higher-ups whether to detain Ponesto or turn him over to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
Alipit reiterated his call to convicts released through the GCTA to surrender or be considered fugitives from the law.
He added Butuan police have yet to receive a list of any convict they would need to watch out for in city. By CLC
