‘Female NPA’ killed in Agusan Sur clash

Army soldiers on Saturday killed two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, including a “female fighter” in Veruela town, Agusan del Sur province, in the latest flare-up of violence between government troops and communist rebels.

1st Lt. Teresita Ingente, spokesperson of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division based in Cagayan de Oro City, said soldiers belonging to the 26th Infantry Battalion were on patrol at a mountainous area in the hinterland village of Sta. Emelia when they encountered an undetermined number of NPA members about 4 p.m.

After 15 minutes of fire fight, the communist guerillas withdrew leaving behind their dead comrades.

One of those killed was later identified as Levi Bangonan, said to be a platoon leader of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee while the female NPA remains unidentified.

The soldiers recovered documents of high intelligence value, eight backpacks containing medical supplies and other personal items from the NPA rebels.

No casualty on the government side was reported. By GD
