Duterte set to grace Caraga athletics meet opening

President Duterte has confirmed his attendance in the opening ceremonies of this year’s Caraga Region Athletic Association games hosted by the provincial government of Surigao del Norte set May 14 to 19.

Surigao del Norte Gov. Francisco Matugas said Duterte has already declared his intention to attend the opening ceremony at the newly inaugurated Siargao Island and Sports Center in Dapa town.

“Pres. Duterte told me he will go to Siargao. That’s from the mouth of the president,” Matugas said during the inauguration and blessing of the P200-million sports hub on Wednesday.

“At least there is already an assurance and I already asked a team from the provincial government to coordinate with the Presidential Management Staff for the initial planning,” he added. Also joining the opening ceremonies are Sen. Bong Go, security and Cabinet officials. 

Some 7,000 athletes,coaches and team officials from the provinces of Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands and the cities of Butuan, Cabadbaran, Surigao, Bayugan, Tandag and Bislig are expected to compete in Siargao.

This will be the first time that Siargao will host the Caraga school-based sports meet which has been moved from its original dates of March 7 to 12 2020, amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) scare. By CLC
