Deployment of more troops eyed in Surigao Sur for NPA fight

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Eduardo Año said an all-out military offensive against the remaining New People’s Army will be launched in Surigao del Sur province as soon as the Marawi crisis is resolved.

In his visit to the 36th Infantry Battalion headquarters in Tago, Surigao del Sur last week, Año said more battalions of Army troopers will be deployed in the province to hunt down communist insurgents.

He ordered all field unit commanders to step up efforts aimed at stopping the extortion activities of the NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

Año has also directed field commanders to secure vital government and private installations and rural businesses from harassment imposed by the NPAs through their extortion activities.

“(The extortion activities) must be stopped,” said Año, who served as platoon leader and an intelligence officer of the 36th IB in 1985 and in January 1988.

“I am very proud to be a member of the Valor Battalion,” Año added. By CLC
