Crackdown goes to Siargao, DENR targets 96 env’t violators

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has started cracking the whip on violators of environmental laws at the country’s surfing capital-Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte province.

At least 96 tourism-related establishments in the island, particularly in General Luna town were found to have been committing multiple violations following a two-month survey conducted by the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Caraga.

EMB Caraga regional director WelsonTrajeco said notices of violation were issued to these resorts or business establishments for operating without an environmental compliance certificate, for lacking sewage and wastewater treatment facilities.

Siargao Island,considered crown jewel of Caraga’s tourism, is composed of the towns of General Luna, Dapa, Del Carmen,Pilar, Burgos, San Isidro, Santa Monica, San Benito and Socorro. By GD
