The New People’s Army (NPA), armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), claimed responsibility over the series of attacks all launched on Tuesday (July 18) in Caraga region .

In a statement, Ka Ariel Montero, the spokesperson of the New People’s Army Regional Operational Command, said the offensives were meant to show its protest against the imminent extension of martial law in Mindanao and the all-out military offensive under Oplan Kapayapaan.

Montero pointed out Tuesday’s simultaneous offensives – disarming of Vice Mayor Emmanuel Suarez of Cortes town in Surigao del Sur, burning of Dole-Stanfilco banana plantation in Tago, also in Surigao del Sur, attack on a construction firm in Surigao City and the killing of a militiaman in Butuan were necessary to protect the interest of the masses and the revolutionary movement .

Ka Amihan, spokesperson for Front Committee 19-B of the CPP-NPA Agusan del Sur South Surigao del Sur Command also said the “punitive action” against Dole Philippines was for their alleged “grabbing” of farmlands of poor farmers and the use of chemicals for aerial spray that causes damage to the environment and the health of Tago town residents.

Amihan also denied that the NPA in the area did not receive money from the banana company.

The management of Dole Philippines has not yet issued any statement pertaining to the rebel leader’s accusation. By CLC
