Members of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) have apprehended three fishermen for allegedly engaging in blast fishing off the waters of General Luna, Siargao Island, in Surigao del Norte, on Monday.

The Surigao del Norte Coast Guard identified the three as Sinclitico Borja Jr, Regie Borja and Jackeyboy Rivas, all residents of Barangay Union in neighboring Dapa town .

A police officer in General Luna reported to the PCG that a fishing boat was conducting blast fishing activities in the area.

Personnel of the Coast Guard station in Siargao went to the area and spotted the fishing boat, which yielded about 50 kilograms of blasted fish and the improvised explosives.

A local ordinance in General Luna bans blast fishing that does not necessarily mean the use of dynamites, but by any form of explosive to stun schools of fish.

The method is illegal as it tends to unintentionally kill other marine animals and damage the reefs. By CLC
