Butuan reported 23 new coronavirus cases on Friday (Aug.21), including five that were locally transmitted, taking the city tally up to 152.
Dr. Gerna Manatad, assistant regional director of the Department of Health (DOH) in Caraga, said of the 152 confirmed cases in the city since April, 89 were due to local transmission, or whose exposure to a confirmed positive patient could no longer be traced and with no known travel history.
Manatad said local coronavirus transmission had been confirmed in many barangays in the city.
Among them was Barangay Ambago, which has 29 COVID-19 cases.
Aside from Ambago, the DOH also identified the following barangays in Butuan as having local transmission of COVID-19: Buhangin, Doongan, Holy Redeemer, Libertad, Limaha, San Vicente, Bayanihan, Ampayon, Mahogany, Villa Kananga and Fort Poyohon.
Health authorities said Butuan remains the epicenter of COVID-19 in the region as the coronavirus infection continues to increase.
“Our local transmission cases are continuously increasing and we need to halt it before it is too late, We remind everyone to please stay at home, regularly wash your hands, observe physical distancing and boost your immune system,” Manatad said.
The city has listed 110 recoveries and three fatalities so far. CLC
