Butuan has a new bishop to lead the Catholic flock in the region’s capital city.
The Most Rev. Cosme Almedilla was formally installed on Tuesday as the third bishop of the Diocese of Butuan, which covers two provinces and three cities of Caraga .
Almedilla’s installation at St. Joseph Cathedral was led by Apostolic Nuncio Gabriele Giordano Caccia, along with Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle and Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma in ceremonies attended by 28 bishops and 200 priests.
Almedilla, according to the CBCP website, was appointed by Pope Francis in March. Before his appointment, Almedilla served the Archdiocese of Talibon in Bohol.
The 59-year-old Bishop, who was formerly assigned as assistant pastoral director of the Diocese of Talibon, has asked for prayers and support from the Catholic faithful.
“I choose to obey God’s calling. I need God, yes we need him,” he told hundreds of Catholic devotees who attended the installation.
A native of Bohol province, he was the third bishop to serve the Diocese of Butuan. The first was Bishop Carmelo Morelos, who served from 1967 to 1994 and Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos, who died in October 2017. By CLC
