Bishop Pueblos’ remains to arrive in Butuan next week

The remains of Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos will be brought back to Butuan possibly on Saturday or Monday next week, a Catholic priest said.

Fr. Carlito Clase, who is very close to the late bishop said relatives of Bishop Pueblos wanted his remains to be brought first in his hometown Loon, Bohol before flown in to the city.

Clase made the pronouncements after thousands of faithful who are now eager to see remains of the bishop who has served the Diocese of Butuan for 22 years asked when will be the bishop’s internment in Butuan be.

“Priests from Diocese of Butuan who are now here in Manila will be holding meeting today to discuss schedules and plans for the Bishop’s internment in Butuan City and when his remains be brought there. I am now here Manila attending a retreat and some of the priests of the Diocese are here also. We will be holding meeting here anytime now,” Clase said in a phone interview.

Pueblos passed away at around 6:55 pm Saturday (Oct. 21) at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City, after succumbing to acute leukemia at the age of 74.

“He passed away Saturday evening. He served the Diocese of Butuan as Bishop in his colorful career for 22 years and died 74 years old after he was born March 8, 1943 in Barangay Moto Sur, Loon, Bohol,” Clase said.

Pueblos’ wake is at Loyola Funeral Chapel in Guadalupe, Makati City.

Fr. Clase added Pueblos’ passing was not only great loss to the Diocese of Butuan but for sake of Christianity.

The Diocese of Butuan touted as one of the biggest Diocese in Mindanao covered areas of three cities in Caraga; namely Butuan, capital of Caraga Region, Cabadbaran in Agusan del Norte, Bayugan in Agusan del Sur with the two provinces Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur covering thirty one municipalities.

A niece of Bishop Pueblos, who asked not to be named, said burial is temporarily set on November 3 the earliest but added “nothing is final yet.”

“He will be flown to Butuan in 3 to 4 days from now as permits are now being fix. Then he will be brought to Agusan del Sur upon request of LGU officials, church officials and Catholics as the province formed part of the Diocese. Then is his last wakes will be at St. Peter Seminary in Ampayon, Butuan City,” she said.

Pueblos served as auxiliary bishop of Davao in 1985 and Bishop of Kidapawan in 1987 before his appointment as bishop of Butuan in 1995.
