Army officer killed in encounter with NPA rebels in Agusan Sur

At least two soldiers, including a junior Army officer were killed while three others were wounded during an armed clash with communist rebels in Bayugan City in Agusan del Sur on Thursday, military reports said.

Soldiers of the Army’s 36th Infantry Battalion were on security patrol when it clashed with about 15 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Sitio Bungkuan in Barangay San Juan at about 4:50 p.m.

During the exchange of fire and maneuver, the report said the rebels  detonated an improvised explosive device killing two soldiers and wounding three others.

The rebels fled after the clash that lasted twenty minutes.

The fatalities were identified as 1st Lt. Rod Michael Aspiras and a Sergeant Ruben Canoy. Wounded were Cpl. Rhuel Apura, Cpl. Rociller Guirero and Pfc. Christian Levi Penus.

The military believed the NPA suffered injuries too.

Meanwhile the 36IB is conducting hot pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels belonging to the Regional Operational Command of NPA Northeastern Mindanao Region. By GD
