A suspected communist rebel has been arrested, two years after he was implicated in the 2018 killing of a San Miguel, Surigao del Sur barangay captain, the Caraga police reported on Monday (May 11).
Brigadier General Joselito Esquivel, Jr., Caraga police regional director, said Lando Turaja, 50, who is No. 4 in the most wanted persons list in Surigao del Sur, was arrested by the police past 5 p.m. Sunday in Barangay Payasan, Lianga town.
Esquivel said the police served an arrest warrants for murder and attempted murder issued by Judge Edwin Malazarte of the Regional Trial Court Branch 27 of Tandag City. He is now detained at the Lianga police jail.
Esquivel said Turaja, who went by the alias Allan, was an active member of the Guerilla Front 30 of the NPA’s Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee. He was the primary suspect in the killing of a barangay captain in San Miguel town.
“Based on our investigation, he was the primary suspect in a shooting incident that killed the Barangay Captain of Cayale, San Miguel Surigao del Sur last 2018,” Esquivel said.
The top police official in Caraga has vowed to intensify the manhunt operations for fugitives on the “most wanted persons” list in the region amid the coronavirus pandemic. CLC
