Combined police and “bantay-dagat” (fish warden) volunteers arrested three suspected illegal fishers in Cortes town in Surigao del Sur on Wednesday, police said.
Lieutenant Vicente Serrano, Cortes police chief, said seaborne police patrol chanced upon fishermen Dennis Cuarteron, Junrey Ajos, and Marjun Cuarteron aboard their boat while conducting unlawful fishing in the seas off Barangay Poblacion around 1:30 p.m.
Operatives found the three fishers using “baling”, a locally-known fishing gear, without permits, Serrano said.
Recovered from the suspects were their boat, illegal fishing paraphernalia and assorted fish catch with an estimated value of P240.
The suspects were detained at the local police jail. By CLC
