At least 220 families from a remote village in Loreto, Agusan del Sur fled their homes following a series of clashes between soldiers and suspected New People’s Army (NPA) forces that also killed two rebels, officials confirmed Thursday.

1st Lt. Amadeuz Celestial, civil military operations officer of the Army’s 60th Infantry Battalion, said the affected residents of Barangay Binucayan were now being assisted by the Loreto town government.

Reports said the residents had feared full-blown military operation and decided to leave home to avoid being caught in the crossfire. The evacuees took temporary shelter in the village center.

Celestial said the clashes broke out on Sunday when soldiers went into the village in search for rebels.

There was no casualty on the government side, he said. By CLC
