Two police officers who were wounded in a clash with communist rebels in Bacuag, Surigao del Norte have been awarded the Wounded Personnel Medal by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Brig. Gen. Gilberto DC Cruz, director of the Caraga Region Police Office (PRO-13), awarded the medals on Wednesday at the Caraga Regional Hospital in Surigao City, where the police officers are recuperating from their injuries.
The PRO-13 said the medals were awarded to the police officers “in recognition of their outstanding gallantry” during the August 11 encounter.
Those given the medals were Patrolmen Ronibal Astronomo and Ernesto Moreno.
During his visit to the hospital, Cruz also provided cash assistance to the wounded personnel.
Cruz had also ordered all police officers in the region to be on heightened alert and initiate appropriate security measures to prevent a similar incident, and intensify their counter-insurgency patrol.
“The Community Support Program of the AFP and PNP is gaining stance against the CPP-NPA terrorists. With the diminishing support from the local populace and the surrender of hundreds of their armed members, the NPAs are now desperate,” Cruz said.
“We seek for the continuous help and support of the public in our counter-insurgency efforts by providing us reliable information. The public is also encouraged to join hands with the authorities in tracking down the NPA terrorists responsible for the crime by providing relevant and timely information to the nearest police station,” he added.
