Two communist rebels were killed in a 25-minute encounter with government troops in Surigao del Sur Sunday afternoon, the military said on Monday.
Soldiers from the Army’s 75th Infantry Battalion (75IB) fought against an “undetermined” number of New People’s Army members at Sitio Road 1K , Barangay Brooks in Bunawan town past 1 p.m., according to Ltc. Jaime Datuin, commanding officer of the 75IB.
When the smoke cleared, government troops confiscated three AK47 and several rounds of bullets from the rebels.
“We are still confirming the identity of the slain terrorist and rest assured that their remains will be turned over to the police and their families for proper disposition,” Datuin said.
“Again we are calling out the remaining NPA members, also to their families and relatives to convince them to surrender and lay down their arms and avail the benefits of the Comprehensive Local Integration Program before it’s too late because the 75th IB will not stop on hunting them down t to maintain the peace and order in our area of operation,” he added.
