Two communist rebels were killed while two soldiers were injured in a clash in San Luis, Agusan del Sur, the military said Wednesday.
Soldiers under the 26th Infantry Battalion were pursuing a group of rebels, responsible for the killing of Manobo farmer on Sunday, until they ran into an NPA camp in the village of Mahagsay, San Luis.
1st Lt. Percival Carido, civil military operations officer of 26th IB, said the soldiers clashed with the rebels, numbering about 60 at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
When the battle was over, the search and clearing operation team found the bodies of the two slain rebels where they also recovered two AK-47 rifles, an M16 rifle with an attached (M203) grenade launcher and one anti-personnel mine.
The wounded soldiers were airlifted to a military hospital and were already in stable condition as of Wednesday, he said.
The bodies of the slain rebels, who remained unidentified, were also turned over to San Luis officials.
Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Jimenea, the 26th IB commander, lauded the civilians for quickly alerting the military about the location of the rebels.
He said the successful operation against NPA showed the importance of civilian cooperation.
“It’s a clear manifestation that the people from far flung areas are already tired of the atrocities committed by this armed group that they will immediately report to us NPA presence in the community. And because of that we were be able to decisively engage them and stop their atrocities in the area.” By CLC
